Between each block and the plate is a layer of pressurised oil, so each individual block floats relative to the isostatic plate. Thanks to the incompressibility of the oil, any unevenness in the pressure on the plate from the press strut is compensated for by the fluid, which is able to move from one block to the other via ducts between the isostatic floating block cavities.
